Grandpa Ray Haslem July 23, 1925 - June 27, 2018

You can read Grandpa's full obituary here.

Kadee and I flew to Utah on the 4th of July to go to Grandpa Haslem's funeral. We were able to stay for 2 weeks and spend a lot of good time with family. It was a long day of travel but we made it all in one piece. Kadee did pretty well for it just being the two of us on the airplane. Well.. two airplanes. We went from OKC to Dallas (30min) and then drom Dallas to SLC (much longer than 30 min..). By the time she got in the car in Salt Lake she was pretty tired! Kevin picked us up and then we met up with Carrie. Kadee was asleep for the whole exchange and didn't wake up until we were driving around Strawberry.

My dad cooked bbq ribs for the 4th and we did sparklers with Kadee. It doesn't take much to entertain us.

I didn't take any pictures during the funeral. I was mostly wrestling Kadee and trying to keep her quiet. I also was accompanying our family men's choir for one of the musical numbers. So I have borrowed pictures from family members.

Friday night viewing. Picture by cousin Jamey.

We're all pretty sure Grandpa has something to do with the little bunny that came running through the grass. All of the little cousins had a blast chasing him.
The above pictures are credited to Aunt Jean.

I did take 1 picture.
It was a long day.

It was a beautiful funeral for Grandpa. He left behind quite a legacy. 11 children, 46 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson. The following audio files are from Grandpa's funeral. Sharla reads the obituary on #5, the men's choir is on #6, Wade's talk is #7, all the Grandkids sing on #8, Beth's talk is #9, Clair talks on #10. Everything else is opening/closing prayers and songs. Jim give the opening prayer (#3) and Jean gives the closing prayer (#12).

Just a carpenter by Wade Haslem

Dad you once commented that you were just a carpenter.
I know another carpenter that you remind me of
Both of you were born under humble circumstances
Both of you were born of goodly parents who taught you right from wrong
He had few worldly possessions
You didn't have a lot of wealth or material things
Just like him you learned precept upon precept and grew in knowledge
In his young life he went out on his own to teach and serve others
You went out on your own to learn knowledge and serve your country
He had a large following of people who loved and respected him
You have a large family who love and respect you
He worked hard to accomplish his mission
You always worked hard to accomplish you goals
He was often found in temples teaching God's will
You too were often in the temple doing the Lord's work
He taught with love and by his example
You taught others in that same way
He instructed his children on how to return to their heavenly home
You taught your children on how to get back to that same home
Ultimately he gave his life, paid for our sins, and was raised from the dead so that we can have eternal life
You dedicated your life to your family that they may get to know this carpenter who's name is Jesus Christ and know that he has made it possible for them to see you again and be with our families forever in the presence of him and God our eternal Father
Just a Carpenter?
Thanks Dad

My tribute to Grandpa was as follows, posted June 27th, the night after he died:

Things I will always remember about my Grandpa Haslem:
1. He always smelled like sawdust.
2. He liked to pop popcorn.
3. He would leave the marshmallow bag open because he liked them hard and chewy.
4. He loved fishing.
5. He had the best low, gut laugh. Subtle, but good!
6. He was mischievous and had THE BEST stories from his childhood.
7. He served in the Merchant Marines (and had some mischievous stories from there too!)
8. I think he only owned plaid shirts.
9. Vans were his favorite shoes.
10. He used to take me with him on trips to Provo so he wouldn't have to drive alone. He always bought me a candy bar.
His memory makes me happy.
